Willis “Loren” Chalfin

July 27, 1926 ~ December 19, 2018 (age 92)

Willis “Loren” Chalfin, 92 of Sandusky, Ohio, and formerly of Fostoria, died Wednesday, 

December 19, 2018 at the Commons of Providence in Sandusky. He was born on July 27, 1926 

in Kenton, Ohio to the late Phillip and Bessie (Dunson) Chalfin. 

 

Loren married Rosemary O’Neill on October 8, 1949 in Akron, Ohio. After 67 years of marriage, Rosemary died on December 29, 2016. Surviving are his children Becky (Tom) Baker and Bill (Annette) Chalfin of Port Clinton, Tom (Laurie) Chalfin and Jack (Cheri Lehnertz) Chalfin of Perrysburg, Ohio. He was known as “Popie” to his 12 Grandchildren and 22 Great Grandchildren and their friends. He is preceded by his parents, wife, son, Jim Chalfin, sisters Katherine Krock and Erma Umphress. 

 

Loren graduated in 1944 from Willard High School. He received his bachelor’s degree in Agriculture in 1950 from Michigan State University, attended MIT and several other agricultural institutions. He was a U.S. Army Air Force Veteran, a member of St. Wendelin Church, Valley Creek Lodge in Fostoria, and The OSU Presidents Club. He was a former member of the Fostoria Country Club and Fostoria Athletic Boosters. Loren was a board member of Ohio Savings and Loan and the Mid States Board as well as several other agricultural organizations.  Loren retired as the CEO of Countrymark in Columbus, and was the former President of Ohio Farmers in Fostoria. He was also formerly employed at Swift & Company in Fostoria and John Stambaugh Co. in Willard. After his retirement, he was a U.S. Agricultural Cooperative Consultant for several different countries. Loren enjoyed spending quality time on Lake Erie fishing, boating and entertaining friends and family.
 

Memorial Mass will be held on Friday, December 28, 2018 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Wendelin Church in Fostoria, with the Father Todd Dominique officiating. Burial will be in the Parish Cemetery. The Rosary will be prayed prior to the service at the church. Memorial contributions are suggested to St.Wendelin Church or The Education Foundation. Online Condolenc
